Review – A Model for Knowing Your Character (Link to Character Writing for Writers)

One of the most important things for writers to do is know their character inside and out. It is a task that sounds simple, but sometimes is deceiving, especially once you start free writing. You should know everything you can about your characters, especially your main character and your main villian. What makes them tick, how they think, why they do things a certain way are all important characteristics to know. Does this character have any quirks that readers will find funny, or will find makes them more real?

There is a article I read reciently, called A Model for Knowing Your Character, by Leigha Dickens that I think is a good read for all aspiring authors. It helps you brush up your skills when it comes to character development, which is critical knowledge in the writing field.

Start Writing Fiction – A Website Review –

Over on Livejournal.com I have my fiction website. It contains both my Fan Fiction, and my Origional Works. Or at least bits and pieces of it.  I use the LJ as a way to connect with fan fiction authors I like, and to surf for pieces of ficiton.

There is a community on Live Journal that I enjoy reading and watching and it is called “Start writing fiction”. It has all sorts of ideas, links, reviews, and author comments on how to go about the business of writing. I enjoy the author’s commentary, and I have found useful information. They make posts on a regular basis, and their links page is long and chuck full of writer links.  They also offer challenges and prompts to get your writing juices flowing. I highly reccomend checking the site out, I use it on a regular basis and don’t know where I would be without it.

Today on Oprah

Ok – I’ll admit it. I’m not a huge fan of Oprah. I don’t watch her every day, and as a matter of fact, I tend to avoid her more often than not. But tonight, as I was struggling to sleep (I work third shift, so yes, it is tonight for me) I happened to glance at the show. And the topic was riviting. It was all about learning to love yourself, and learning to appreciate what you were given. Oprah talked about her struggles with her weight, and what had become the most important thing in the world to her – giving herself balance. I was hooked, and I want all of you to know that if you never watch her, and you avoid her like I do – this is the ONE show to watch. Today’s show is it. You can still catch it on Oprah.com.

I can’t believe that I’m endorsing Oprah. I am, however, planning on taking away some of her advice. I plan on thinking about what I really want, about my relationship with food, and how I can change things. I need to make goals for 2009 anyhow – and she gave me hope and insperation. Its been a long time since I’ve been truly excited about an idea, so I encourage all of you to take part – watch the Monday show from this week, and be inspired to go out and decide what you really want.

Twilight -The Movie – My review

I loved the book Twilight. Ok, mayb loved isn’t the right word. I enjoyed the book Twilight quite a lot. It was a fun little book that took my mind to a place where I would never have thought about vampires being, and I loved certain aspects of it.

The movie – I was not so thrilled about. For some reason the person who played Bella made Bella seem very flat, and very Mary-sue ish. I know that Bella was kinda Mary sue anyhow – but this acting just didn’t do it for me, and made the movie seem a little emptier of feelings than It had to be.

Edward and Bella did not seem to have the connection they did in the books. They said the same lines, they acted much the same – but the actors did not have the vibe necessary to make it real. I couldn’t taste the romance, like I could in other movies. This had all the makings of a bad “I got a crush” thing – not a “I love you and I would die for you” thing. And “I love you and I would die for you” is suppose to be what they are going for. Bella would die to be with Edward forever – Edward would willingly die to keep Bella living.

I loved the book – the only part of the movie that excited me was the baseball game. It was fun to watch the way the characters interacted, and it was the most “real” scene of the movie.

The only two really good performers in the movie was the boy who played Jacob (but then I’m a Jacob fan) and the girl who played Alice. The rest kind of bored me.

I give the movie a C. What could have been a great film was a huge dissapointment. Flat acting, scenes that just didn’t meet with the anticpation – it wasn’t a movie that I was impressed with. All I can hope is that they do better with New Moon. Right now I’m sceptical, and expecting that I will wait to rent the movie rather than see it in the theater.

Sorry Twilight fans – I was not a fan of the film. They could have done it much better.
